Project summary:

Cuckoos’ Day festival is a traditional cultural event taking place in Brăneşti, Ilfov county. The project came to the support of the local community by strengthening the cultural identity of Brăneşti, highlighting local customs, as well as the Romanian traditional arts and crafts. Ethnologists and geographers participated in a research on the objects, data and documents from the collections of local teachers. Emphasis was laid on the study of motifs and materials of the woven or embroidered pieces of clothing, the dyes, accessories and techniques used in manufacturing the traditional costumes from Brănești; masks and costumes were manufactured for the festival.

Facts & figures

  • 2 editions of the yearly event Cuckoos Day organized in 2015 and 2016;
  • 400 artists performing and 50 youngsters from the community involved the theatre activities;
  • 22 traditional costumes designed for Cuckoo man and Cuckoo woman;
  • 1 ethnic research conducted between March - May 2015 and over 170 inhabitants interviewed;
  • 1 bilingual documentary movie about the Cuckoos Day;
  • 2 wood pieces representing Brănești coat of arms sculptured.
