Székely Traditions - a journey into the culture of Székelys from Romania

Project summary

The project proposed the consolidation of the cultural identity of Székelys from Romania through promotion of their specific traditions and artcrafts, generating a better understanding of the cultural diversity through a wide exposure of the Romanian citizens to the specific of Székely art and culture. The two days of the Székely Fair in Bucharest offered the visitors the opportunity to admire the products, to talk to craftsmen, to decorate on gingerbread, to create wood objects, beads. Thus, the project managed to create a brand event of the traditional Székely culture in Romania

  • a two-day event organised in Bucharest to promote the culture of the Székely with the participation of artists and local handcrafters;
  • 1 monography of the Székely culture published in three languages - Romanian, English and Hungarian, based on the findings of a field research comprising main traditions and handcrafts, available here:  https://issuu.com/varosimazs/docs/book_-_traditii_secuiesti_szekely_h/1?e=0/39101154    
  • 20 folk traditions, handcrafts and gastronomic specialties presented;
  • 1 documentary movie presenting the Székely culture and the traditions as outlined within the monography;
  • 1 launching event of the monography organised in Sfântu Gheorghe.

The 53-minute long documentary gathers the lively traditions of the secui from Romania. The public will be learning the different ways of making bread and ginger bread or preparing traditional brandy.  A wedding is also envisaged with the purpose of capturing traditional elements of the secui ethnics in Romania. ” The documentary is available here:
