Project summary

The main objective of ART_ROM was to develop and promote artistic and socio-cultural interventions, methods and practices necessary to understand the Roma culture from the Romanian urban territories, to encourage intercultural dialogue, cultural diversity and to develop a culture of inclusion at local level, based on pilot-approaches in Turnu Magurele and Alexandria.

The project aimed at raising awareness among Romanian artists and NGOs regarding the Roma culture. Activities included the involvement of young Roma and non-Roma from Turnu-Magurele and Alexandria who participated in the making of the community theatre plays; staging of theatre plays; local consultation groups; community theater and personal development workshops, as well as exhibitions displaying portraits of Roma people.

Facts & figures

• 1 ART_ROM caravan organised with the participation of 9 artists;
• 2 social and political theatre pieces performed in 4 towns from Romania (Măgurele, Alexandria, Bucharest and Cluj) with the participation of more than 800 people;
• 40 personal development and community theatre workshops organized for over 50 children and youngsters from Alexandria and Turnu-Măgurele;
• 550 NGOs from Romania received Maskar Handbook explaining the social and artistic intervention model proposed through the project;
• 60 representatives of the local stakeholders from Alexandria and Turnu-Măgurele participating to the 2 Local Consultancy Groups;
• 105 artists and creators informed about the Maskar model of social intervention through art;
